Qui êtes-vous, ...?: Qui êtes vous, William Klein?

William Klein is an american photographer and filmmaker. Besides his iconic fashion photo editorials for Vogue and his famous photo series dedicated to modern metropolises, he has directed a series of films, including the art house movie “Qui êtes vous, Polly Maggoo?” and the anti-imperialistic satire “Mr. Freedom”. In 1956 he won the Prix Nadar, the annual French photography award. He has been living in France for the last decades.

www.quietes-vous.net is an online tribute to exceptional characters and to black and white aesthetics curated by Kikamod.
It was inspired by a mock French TV programme that has never actually existed. The “Qui êtes vous, …?” concept was part of the plot of “Qui êtes vous, Polly Maggoo?”, a 1966 French film directed by William Klein. It is a satirical art house movie about fashion industry and its excesses, about television and magazines as well as society and its stereotypes, fairy tales, princes and princesses. The heroine, Polly Maggoo, is a fashion model acted by Dorothy McGowan. Polly is being followed throughout the film by a television crew. A quite peculiar TV crew, indeed, consisting of Philippe Noiret and Jean Rochefort, among others, who hold a biography programme about well-known personalities they attempt to “expose” on camera. Ironically enough, after Polly Maggoo, the directors of the programme plan a show about the Pope.
